eden's frock

A little dress for a little girl. This one was quite special as it was a gift to my niece Eden for her first birthday. Although still a little big for her it will be perfect for summer.

Fabric:

Linen

Notions:

Buttons, interfacing

Pattern Details

A pattern by PaperDoll patterns bought off Etsy called 'Amy Dress'. No modifications made.

Construction Process

  1. Print A4 pattern, cut and tape together.

  2. Cut out fabric!

  3. Iron on interfacing

  4. Sew front and back pieces together at the shoulder seam

  5. Sew on neck and armhole binding - now this one was finicky as the pattern itself is quite small. Luckily the pattern came with a link to a tutorial on how to attach the binding.

  6. Add pockets…(my first time doing pockets!)

  7. Finish the hem

  8. Sew a gathering stitch around the waist and gather the stitch to fit the bodice. It was a little tricky to make the gathered stitch sit nice and evenly distributed, so I would recommend taking your time here.

  9. Lastly add the buttons!

Techniques and Skills

Techniques used: topstitch, gathering stitch, neck/armhole binding and adding buttons

New skills learned: Adding pockets and gathering fabric!

Outcome and Evaluation

Although Eden is still to small to fit into her dress I really enjoyed working on a smaller scale with less fabric to deal with and manouver through a sewing machine. When it came to the binding however, the smaller scale proved a little more tricky… Worth every second of the process to see Eden wear the dress !
